Mathematics at The Wolds and Vale Federation

At the Wolds and Vale federation, we aim to promote mathematics as a way of life, an essential and fundamental aspect of everything we do. As such, we constantly ensure that all children are exposed to high quality lessons, activities and resources. We promote a deep, masterful and meaningful understanding of maths, including fluency, problem-solving and reasoning skills.

The mastery approach to maths is designed to promote a deep and logical understanding of all elements of mathematics, enabling each child to work methodically with strong coherence, demonstrate their understanding in a variety of different ways and apply this to solve problems and explain their reasoning. Maths is so much more than numbers – maths is a skill for life.

What can you do at home?

There are many different things you could do at home to help your child with maths. Fluency is the ability to recall, use and apply mathematical knowledge in a range of different ways. This is greatly helped by being able to fluently recall additive facts and multiplicative relationships.

Children in Key Stage 1 are tested on their knowledge of additive facts to 20. This can be seen on and practiced with the document below.

Children from Year 2 to Year 6 have access to Times Tables Rockstars. This online resource allows children to practise their multiplicative facts and develop their fluency skills. The link for this can be found below.
